This book felt ambitious and I don’t feel like it worked. I didn’t love the messages and the rhymes felt too complicated.

I like that the family has a different make believe story going on each page. Much more interesting than the same set of monkeys through the whole book. Good illustrations as well.

A very cute spin on 10 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. We adored 10 Little Ninjas. The illustrations are wonderful. This is my son’s favorite book right now. It’s cute, rhyming, and full of fun characters! I love how each page is a new imaginative adventure the children go on, before nodding off to bed.

It’s cute, but the inconsistency of theme threw me off guard. I wish it would have stuck with ninjas. Or maybe if the kids fell asleep one by one and the kids that were awake kept playing, it would make more sense. Basically, it was all over the place and didn’t have good transitions.

the examples are a bit of a stretch and why is the mom the one in charge and the dad is doing jack?

Counting picture book starting with 10 ninjas in the rhyming of Ten Little Monkeys..., but in this tale, the kids are different things on every page/number.

I used this title in storytime at the library this morning. It was very successful with the preschool age children. (The sudden subject shifts were a little too complex for the toddlers.) It uses the narrative pattern and lyrical sequence of 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed, which makes it really easy to read aloud (or sing!) It also has great visual detail on the page, which really encourages dialogue during one-on-one bedtime reading sessions (Yeah! Early literacy skills!). You start with 10 ninjas, then they start dropping one-by-one, 9, 8, 7, etc., with each number showing different costumes, astronauts, cowboys, dragons, etc. You could read this book dozens of times with each iteration being a different experience.

Ninjas, cowboys, astronauts, those kids just won't go to bed! Great illustrations and my kids were enthralled. If only they willingly went to sleep, too!

Not sure this reimagining works for me, but it likely will for others. FYI Mom is the disciplinarian that Dad calls on to lay down the law of bedtime.
