This has the honor of being the last of the Caldecott books of nursery rhymes for me to read! It is also by far the most comprehensive. I enjoyed the illustrations, but there's a lot of rhymes on a page without consistent, clear separations. The index is well done, though.

I love the pictures so much but sometimes the nursery rhyme selections were subpar.

I was reading this, pretty bored by ninety percent and remembering the other ten percent from my childhood in some amusement until I got to the following rhyme:

A woman, a spaniel, and walnut tree,
The more you beat them the better they be.

REALLY?!

There are 376 Rhymes in this book with around 260 illustrations throughout the book. Most of them are just little drawings between text. There are a few full page artwork layouts that are lovely with details and soft colors.

I found this nice little verse that I think would make a lovely whole Children’s book if expanded. There is a lovely drawing with it of an old woman in a basket with her broom in hand.

“There was an old woman tossed up in a basket
Nineteen times as high as the moon;
Where she was going I couldn’t but ask it
For in her hand she carried a broom.

Old woman, old woman, old woman, wuoth I,
O whither, o whither, o whither so high?
To brush the cobwebs off the sky!
Shall I go with thee? Ay, by and by.”

It really captured my imagination. If I had artistic abilities, I would work on making this a story, but I don’t have time. I can see it with very beautiful pictures over-looking the world. What makes the cobwebs? Maybe it’s dreams, or she’s sweeping away the airplane trails. Something like that.

This seems to be a comprehensive collection of Nursery Rhymes. Going through this book, I notice that many of the books I have read in the Caldecott section have a seed in these old stories. I loved being able to read the entire Mother Goose story. That is interesting and I think it would make a good story too.

The niece and nephew enjoyed some of these for a little while, but they also got a little old. The nephew liked the ones about the bad children and found them funny while the niece enjoyed other ones. We skimmed here and there to find little rhymes they wanted to read. They would see a picture and ask to have that one read.

The artwork is really amazing in this volume. It’s very long, so it’s something to read over time.
