Girlfriend on Mars by Deborah Willis

I never enjoyed science fiction novels. I don’t know what difference there is between space and dragons, but there are. This wasn’t a bad novel. Weird. Yes. But not bad. It was written very well. It struggled a little but it was never slow paced.

The characters, you don’t resize how annoying or how irritating they are until you keep reading. Kevin (I had already forgotten his name! 😂) is so lame like a little puppy dog. And Amber is so full of herself. And this whole book is about not wanting but wanting to cheat on their significant other. It’s ridiculous.

“To the one who conquers, I will give a place to sit with me on my throne.”

Changing my mind, I am giving this book a 3 out of 5 stars. At first I was only giving it a 2 stars. But I changed my mind. Although I hated it, there was still a fair amount of character development so ⭐️ for that. The uniqueness of the story gave it another ⭐️ (although I would’ve just broken up with my partner. And another ⭐️ for it being medium paced.

P.S. another note. It was funny to envision a world where social media was still relevant and proves just how addicted we are.

The concept was original here but the writing was just miserable and devoid of hope.

Very unique book. Definitely not for everyone. I really enjoyed it.

For me, what took the rating down was that it dragged a bit between the 30%-60% mark. And more importantly, the cover, title, and genre label of science fiction sets up the reader for certain expectations
that aren't really met until like the last 10% of the book. like the book didn't feel like science fiction. I remember another review saying they think it would have been better if the book was set further in the future and I agree.

Loved the Canadianisms. So cool to read about Thunder Bay! Wished Lakehead University was mentioned haha.
I really liked the realistic sad ending, especially when contrasted with the humour and satire present in the rest of the book. This part made the book feel the most like science fition to me
