Disappointing after the fantastic first volume.

The characters make illogical decisions, nobody’s plan seems to be particularly thought through and there’s something about the main characters being possessed by demons that makes me uncomfortable.

A real shame.

Am I biased because queer women and morally grey archives during a French Revolution-esque setting is the center of my Venn diagram of interests? Yes. But everyone should still read this book!!

I could not put this book down. Every single character had something exciting going on, all the time. I was both happy and upset every single time that the book swapped perspectives, simply because I wanted to keep reading about the current character at the same time that I wanted to know what would happen with the new character.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best books I've read all year. And the ending! I am so looking forward to the next book in the series!

Maybe I was harder on this book after liking the first so much. The plotting in this book was all over the place. The climax was weaker than previous moments in the story. So many redundant details, making the story unnecessarily longer. Every single female character was under twenty with one exception, and by the end I started getting the ick. It felt like too much was being held back in anticipation for later books, rather than getting the good character developments out.

Django Wexler doesn't disappoint with this sequel. Well worth the read if you are interested in fantasy that is engaging, interesting, and diverse.

I found this to be very focused on the political structure of the city. It was presented often in a a very dry and non-entertaining matter that made the story feel sluggish. Similar to [b:The Thousand Names|15810910|The Thousand Names (The Shadow Campaigns, #1)|Django Wexler|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1355441268s/15810910.jpg|21536059] the end is action packed, making the flow of the story feel inconsistent.
There were also several new characters that were introduced very abruptly, mostly Raesinia, that could have used some more focus at the start to build up the character. I didn't feel like I understood her motives for instigating a revolution, or any of her actions and relationship with the cabel.

Again I have to begin with; I was disappointed, it was good, just not as awesome as the first book. You all know that story, I went in all YAY, and then when it was not YAY it was yay, I got disappointed.

I think what made it this was that the last one was flintlock, and all war and campaign. This one took place in a city. Cities can work sometimes, but for me they seldom reach those awesome heights. Cities can just be so meh. What can you do there? Politics and intrigues. Which all are good things..yup good.

Winter is sent undercover. Marcus gets a new job. And a new POV is the princess of the country. Rhae is trying to save herself and her country from the bad Duke.

I missed war, sigh. But it looks like the next book will be all war, yay.

Still, it was GOOD! I enjoyed. There were intrigues, politics, bad people, bad priests, the whole magic thing hidden in darkness. Marcus who is really cool and Winter who is all Winter.

I look forward to book 3 and hope it will be war war war, camp camp camp, back to its roots.

Not quite as good as the first book. High hopes for the rest of the series though.

LOVED the character development in The Shadow Throne. I enjoyed Winter and Raesinia's chapters especially. This is better than the first book and I can't wait to dive into the 3rd!

Didn't enjoy as much as book 1, but has set up some great storylines for book 3 to continue with!
