Where to start? The incredibly cool worldbuilding? The beautifully clever retelling and plots that really /got/ Sherlock Holmes in a way not all retellings do? The note I have to end on is this is the queerplatonic t4t Holmes and Watson duo of my wildest dreams. Obsessed with everything here. Pretty sure this book was written specifically for me.

Well, the author's done her research. And from what I can tell, it is a successful example of "wingfic," that subset of fanfic in which characters have wings. That seems oddly specific.

The tone and style are good for the era, and you have to admire the way Addison has stitched her new ideas into old plots. But darn it, there's just too much old plot. I've read a zillion Holmesian stories, and this is too close.

Crow's good. Doyle is generic for a while then gets interesting. But for all the added worldbuilding, none of it seems to matter much (except near the end Doyle's talents get useful). The sexuality of the two leads is intriguing but ends up not mattering much. And gosh, if you want an angel-demon relationship that develops, go read/watch Good Omens.

I would have like this Holmesian story to have been Holmesless. Tell us more about Crow and Doyle and the world! But I admit many people seem to LUUUVVV fanfic, and this book's for them. Not so much for me.

Katherine Addison had the courage to make Holmes and Watson a queerplatonic t4t couple when no one else did.

An interesting queer/lgbtqia twist or retelling of Sherlock Holmes. It was refreshing as a person who identifies as Agender, aromantic and, asexual. I was disappointed that the supernatural aspect of the plot was more secondary to the crimes/murders introduced in the story because I wasn’t interested in the murder aspect to the plot. I did feel at times the supernatural aspect was difficult to grasp through the way it was taboo even for the characters to speak about despite how the circumstances afflicted them.

Right, so I didn't know this book started as a Sherlock Wingfic.
I also never heard of the term Wingfic before
