My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

I’m writing this review late so I don’t remember a ton of details except that the pacing threw me off (didn’t like that there was a time skip immediately after the protagonist was fired in chapter 10) and the romance plot seemed like an afterthought. I liked that the main relationship of the book seemed to be between the protagonist and her Miranda Priestley-esque boss, except in this story, the Emily Charlton analog is a bitch who sabotages the Miranda which eventually leads to her being wrongfully fired; a plot which takes a lot of time for the protagonist and her bitchy-with-a-heart-of-gold boss to unravel. Without looking at the book again, I can’t remember a single name. The love interest comes in, dazzles the protagonist who thinks for a while he and The Boss are fucking but once that’s debunked, they promptly start fucking. Meanwhile, she’s fired and has to go from her advertising (???) job in New York (???? or London? Genuinely couldn’t tell you) back to her parent's farm. While there, she gives the place a new farm-to-table face and advertises the hell out of it, so much so that her ex-boss comes by months later. After the protagonist is done gently torturing her, they become friends and devise a plan to suss out what really happened re: Emily Charlton and the coup.

Damn, I hate writing reviews late; dear future self: write these things as soon as you finish or you’ll be left with synopses like this, and then no one’s happy! Okay peaking at the book again and now I see: Katie is the protagonist, Demeter is the boss, Alex is the love interest. Emily Charlton and her posse are Sarah, Rosa, and Flora, although do not ask me which is which.

Did I like the book? I guess not if it was unmemorable, but I finished it. That deserves a couple of stars. I’m in sort of a reading rut; been picking stuff up and droppin’ ‘em halfway through so it’s a big deal that I finished at all.

I think maybe I am growing out of cheesy chick-lit, because this book just felt annoying and long-winded at times.

Katie/Cat is a very unlikeable character in the first half of the book. Then, Kinsella tries to get the reader to swing back around and like her by making her more "real". I understand that the main character needs to go through growth in order to develop, but it felt so forced and extreme.

So the book for me was just...meh. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to write home about.

Picked it up from the library yesterday, and the next thing I knew, it was 4 hours later, and the book was done. Good story.

This was about our pretence of having a perfect happy life on social media, and how it's perceived from the outside.
