Deeply Odd

Dean Koontz

3.85 AVERAGE

This entry in the series gets three stars for humor but I'm thinking it was just okay story wise. The mystery within the mystery stuff is running a little thin.

Deeply disappointing.
I’ve been a huge Odd Thomas fan for many years, but lost track of the series and was delighted to find it had been completed several years back with two final books. This penultimate was such a let down. I’ll be honest, I got 121 pages in and just couldn’t deal with the surly child-like narrative anymore. I skipped ahead to the last 2 chapters for a bit of closure. (Found none. Would need to go back a few more chapters and it’s not worth it.)
A few more specific notes: Odd has lost his belief in the inherent goodness of the world and become rather whiny, bordering on petulant. His internal monologue is exhausting detailed and yet still oversimplified. He just feels kinda dumb now. He mentioned his pancakes at least 5 times and I skipped most of the book. (That used to be a charming detail he’d pull out once, maybe twice.) I think that’s about it.

Thankfully much improved over the last one. It definately had its strange moments but it was very enjoyable. I thought there was great character development. I think more questions were raised than answered, but I would assume that they will be in the final book of the series. (Hopefully.)
Warning: Only read if you've read the rest of the series, otherwise I think you might think it even stranger.

Another "Odd" book by Koontz ... But I liked it.

Odd sure gets himself into some weird/creepy/horrifying situations. And he always manages to find sidekicks with the knowledge/resources/equipment to get him back out. It was a little wordy but the story was good.

I liked this Odd Thomas better than the last one. You are introduced to a new cast of zany and extraordinary characters. Odd Thomas is also helped along the way by Alfred Hitchcock. The bad guys are truly awful but there are lots of truly good people out there combating them. Without giving away anything just know that this story ends on a note of hope in this series that we haven't seen since Oddy lost his Stormy Llewellyn. I have a feeling that this series will be wrapping up soon and I just hope that Odd Thomas finds his happy ending at the end of it.

FAIL.

I enjoyed the earliest in the series best, but the writing is still stellar and I look forward to plunging in to the last one.
