What a fascinating read that blended a blissful, progressive future with the dark realities of twisted humankind. The exploration of a society that believes victims and punishes all abusers felt like a bit of a dream at times, while also balanced with reminders that no society is without its dark secrets. Religion is uncommon and the idea of angels versus monsters is explored in secular ways. There was a glimpse into polyamory within a family unit, as well as multi-generational households and the complexities of the trust within those relationships. The main character Jam transitioned at a young age and all expressions of gender and sexuality seem to be common and accepted. I would have loved an illustration of the difficult-to-visualize creature Pet. Overall I was captivated and intrigued by the premise and plot. Check trigger warnings before reading.

I absolutely adored this book. With such beautiful prose and a significant message, Pet should be required reading in schools.
Pet occurs in the eutopic Lucille, where all monsters have been defeated by angels. At least, that’s what everyone believes. So when Jam meets pet, an other-worldly creature here to hunt a monster, the life she has come to know is thrown into disarray.
Emezi raises powerful questions on our society and advocacy, yet also provides the antidote: hope. Hope that above all, we remember and learn.
I am so thankful to have read such a powerful book, and would recommend it 1000 times over, but please check trigger warnings, for there are heavy subject matters.

That was absolutely amazing! What?! THIS should be required reading in schools. Wow I’m absolutely flabbergasted by the strength and … nope I can’t continue. I’m speechless. Incredible.

My first Akwaeke novel and I LOVED it. I truly cannot wait to read Bitter.

I absolutely adored the world/community in which this novel was set in (although we have the "curtain" raised at some point - but the idea of this perfect, nothing-goes-wrong-because-bad-people-don't-exist-anymore world was so...intriguing and quite frankly, a very lovely thought).

The representation in this book - unmatched. We've got poly relationships, trans rep, queer rep, disability rep, you name it.

The dynamics and relationships between the humans but also between Pet and Jam was fun to explore. Emezi's writing is top tier.

TW for Pet: panic attacks, disassociation, and child abuse

I enjoyed Pet! I feel like it's one of those books that if it didn't have so much hype around it I would've liked it more. I think I was just expecting so much that when it didn't meet expectations I was a tad disappointed. That being said I loved the trans and black rep and the writing was BEAUTIFUL. (I would read more of Emezi's work just based on how good their sentences were.) I would def recommend Pet to anyone interested in a short, speculative YA novel with great representation and a unique premise!

Perfectly conveying racism and police brutality through fantasy themes and referring to the bad people in this world as monsters. Jam is a trans girl who uncovers an unfortunate mystery in her family with the help of the morally grey fantasy being: Pet. Pet acts as a guardian and protector of Jam and her community whilst having horrific and extreme motives that are what make it a morally grey character that I still adore. This book is quite reflective, because it makes you wonder if people who have done bad things like those that are done in this book do deserve to be dehumanised as monsters and be sentenced to death, which I can understand as a solution because of the objectively immoral things done by humans in this book. It opened my eyes to how much of the world is full of bad people, and how not all of them can be noticed as such straight away or are even conscious of it themselves. Very scary thought that Akwaeke illustrated so well.
