Things I liked:
- I liked that this was a Queer story.
- I liked the undertones of complicated family dynamics. I love the little chosen family the characters have.
- I liked that the sex scenes weren't gross/didn't make me cringe. One of my pet peeves is when a book that isn't a spicy book does too much with their sex scenes. (although I low-key hated the thought of them having sex on the subway)
- The story wasn't completely predictable. Like you could tell Jane's story & the missing Uncle's story were connected but I wasn't sure exactly how until it was revealed. I also was hoping for a happy ending, but wasn't sure if that was going to mean Jane ending up going home & reconnecting with her family or if it was going to be them ending up together in present day.
Things I didn't like:
- The character felt like they were a little too stereotypical. The experiences of all characters played so much into the stereotypes of their identities that it felt like I was rolling my eyes at them.
- Some things just weren't fleshed out enough. Like it seemed like being a student was important to August initially but the story doesn't explain how she gets through her assignments while doing all of this other stuff. It honestly just felt like the author needed an easy explanation for why she moved to NY, but didn't fully develop that point.
- The story felt kinda unrealistic, but not because of the whole stuck in time thing. It's just like so convenient that she ends up getting that check just as the restaurant needed it. Like even in a book like this where aspects are inherently unrealistic I wish the parts that could've been realistic were made to be realistic.
