Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books are a wealth of minor and secondary characters that shine with their own light while taking a backseat to everybody's favorite wizard. In "Backup," Harry's brother Thomas takes center-stage for a short story featuring a conspiracy that grows stranger at every turn.

Thomas faces a problem. Harry is investigating a child's kidnapping, but, what Harry doesn't know is that the purported mother is actually a centuries old demon. Thomas knows all about the demon but is unable to tell Harry of the demon due to an even older pact amongst the demon-hunters. Thus, Thomas has to find a way to help Harry without letting Harry in on what he's doing.

Jim Butcher is, of course, a master-class fantasy writer and this story is well worthy of his talents. It offers an interesting look at the world of Harry Dresden from a new point of view; a POV I hope Butcher visits again in longer form.

This is a good story and one that fans will enjoy. What makes this a great book, though, is the packaging. Subterranean Press printed the book in a hardcover trade size, with heavy paper and incredible illustrations done by Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame.

Harry Dresden's half brother Thomas Raith has to help Harry on his latest case without him knowing or a demon will be loosed on the world. Good stuff but really short and awfully pricey.

A Thomas POV... the secret war he is fighting, because- of competition. Also how he acts to provide support and save his brother.
A quick, barely an hour read.

Ok, first story I read from the Dresden Files that is not told from Harry's perspective. And I really like that! Though Harry will always be my fave. I have to find the version with the illustrations though, because I listened to it as an audio...

This 12,000 word, 70 page novelette is an incredibly quick read, but if you're as hopelessly addicted to [author: Jim Butcher]'s Dresden Files series as I am, you'll love this book.

Unlike the other Dresden novels, Harry barely appears at all in this story, having a scant sentence or two of dialog through the entire thing. The action centers around Thomas, Harry's brother, and a vampire of the white court.

This is exactly the kind of non stop no holds barred fantasy romp filled with magic and things that go bump in the night that Dresden fans have thrilled to since book one. So go read this already! :)

Folks new to the Dresden universe should start at the beginning and read Butcher's excellent [book: Storm Front] first, otherwise the characters will lack the necessary depth needed to fully enjoy the experience.

This was a very short book told from Thomas' perspective. According to Jim Butcher's website, it takes place after Small Favors. I'm a little confused though because in Backup, Thomas still has his white Hummer and it got busted in Small Favor.

I didn't realize this is supposed to go after like book 10, but thankfully you don't need to know too much about the past to enjoy the story, its so separate from Harry's story. Overall, an enjoyable read, the second to last chapter was a bit much for me, but entirely expected.
