A heart-rending story of a young boy's survival during the Second Sudan Civil War. And to learn that this was based on Salva's real experiences is so sad. There are some very tough depictions of violence and death, but a heartpounding account of survival. A great read for middle grade. Can be pared with When Stars Are Scattered or I Will Always Write Back.

this was a really good book that educated me in something i knew nothing about going into it. it was very sad at times and my heart ached (and still does) for salva, and i wish him nothing but the best with his foundation!!!

Struggles of two African children impacted by the lack of clean water access in southern Sudan. It alternates between their perspectives 20 years apart. The setting during one time period is a long trek to refugee camps trying to escape war.

Read this because my middle schooler will be reading this for his English class. I wish I would have read this sooner. It's a middle grade/YA book so it was a quick read for me. This was fiction but it is based on the true story of Salva Dut (one of the "lost boys" of Sudan). The story goes back and forth between his story starting in 1985 and a girl, Nya, in 2008. War, heartbreak, perseverance, reunion. "How could memories feel so close and so far away at the same time." 5 *s

Great- based on a true story tale about The Lost Boys of Sudan, life struggling to find & collect water every day, surviving in a war torn country & the struggles of a conflict filled country in turmoil. A very inspiring & hopeful tale, too.

listened to first half on audiobook & read second half! will be teaching this this year as it’s in our curriculum. has many emotional, traumatic, and devastating incidents for the main character (based on a real person) but overall hopeful at the end.
