This might be *better* than the first entry in the series - characters established, clearer plot, etc. - but I didn't *enjoy* it as much because of all the torture and murder and end of the world stuff. In particular, the grisly deaths of noncombatant friendly characters was pretty different from the tone of the first book. But it was nice to see the arc from the first book wrapped up, and I doesn't seem like future books will revolve around armies of undead, dire prophecies, etc., so I'm excited for the third.

This book was a rollercoaster. So many things happened I can't remember them all. Reading the first and second half of the book feels like reading two different books.
There's a lot of graphic content in this one that I really did not like (SA, torture) but I'm so invested at this point that after finishing the first half I had to write a whole essay on Seregil's feelings towards Alec in the notes on my phone, I was just so into it.
The graphic stuff was really not something I like though, so this is 4.5* for me. Better than the first book for sure.
