Quote:

“There are things you can't walk away from. Not if you want to live with yourself afterward.”

Setting:

Death Masks continues Dresden's story in the fictional version of Chicago, not to long after the last book.

Plot:

Dresden has two separate issues to deal with, first is a major vampire of the red court comes to town to challenge him to a duel to the death with terms that he can't bring himself to avoid. Shortly afterwards he is approached to help track down an ancient artifact that has been stolen from the church.

Writing:

Jim Butcher's writing in this novel is fully enjoyable. He is great at making it obvious who is talking or doing what even when action is going quick and fast. Which honestly is where his writing shines, his action scenes are quick and understandable, something that can be hard in writing.

Characters:

Several characters return in this book, including some of my favorites. We also learn a good bit about some of them that make them more well rounded. A few new characters are introduced, each of which you either find yourself caring for almost instantly or instantly hating them. Characters are a strong asset of this novel for sure.

Pros:

Interesting twists and turns
Great look into existing characters

Cons:

There is a really hard to read scene
Clumsy ending

Recommendation:
This book is one I almost wish I could recommend avoiding, however events in it due to lead to events in future books. There is a scene in this book I really can't stand. However if that scene wasn't in the book I do enjoy it as a whole otherwise. That scene does really drag my overall score down though as I found it so out of place and honestly gross.
