In this modern retelling of the Anansi story, Anansi the boy meets Anansi the spider and learns the importance of sharing with those that you love. Gorgeous illustrations and full of West African food and culture, this is a great book to expose kids to new stories and places.

The folk tale part doesn't feel like the "real" thing--the boy feels lonely and that's the lesson in generosity, because he's happy when he shares with his siblings. It's more a "here's the lesson the traditional stories tell" portrayal, when the grandmother tells the boy that meta narrative, but none of the Anansi trickery I was expecting. What I like about this book is the modern view, though they live in a "cold" city so the family may be living in the West now. They fly back to Ghana and it's a very normalized and authentic view of life there. I especially liked the info page in the back with Ghanaian foods and symbols. There's also a small nod about traditional stories always being "true".
