It's always fun when authors take one of their series and connect it to the other. Especially if you'd read the author's other books! This was another fun adventure from Rick Riordan, full of mythology, good friends, and a bunch of gods making the wrong choices. Of course, the stakes have been risen for the next book, so I can't wait to see how Magnus's adventures play out!

I thought the plot of this book was a little silly until I realized it was based off an actual Norse myth about Thor and the giant Thrym. This book also had some amazing characterization: Sam balancing her personal beliefs as a Muslim who is also the daughter of a Norse god; Hearth’s tragic upbringing by ableist parents; and Alex dealing with transphobia in Valhalla. I understand why this book has won a Stonewall Book Award. That being said, I think the titular character fell a little flat for me; it didn’t feel like he affected the plot almost at all and he reminded me of Apollo in The Trials of Apollo series. I also still think this book didn’t need to be connected to Percy Jackson, but we will see what they do with that connection in the last book. This book definitely felt more of a part 1/2 to me and actually kind of ended how I thought the first book was going to end.

This book was fine. This still isn't my favorite series. I adore Sam and Alex.

Another banger. I have to say, Magnus Chase has my favorite cast of characters out of any Riordan series, hands-down. They are all incredible. It's gonna hinge on the last book, but it may very well surpass the original series for me. I'm having a great time so far, hardcore recommend

Preface though: I agree that the Norse gods are portrayed badly. Like awfully. It's really bad. But for me, it's negligible (other than the fact that Thor pisses me off and is just utterly irredeemable - just a pure comic relief character). I don't know enough about Norse mythology to be truly bothered. And I feel like Loki's character sort of makes up for it. But if that sounds like a deal-breaker, it probably is.
