I wanted so much to love this book. It started so well, was intriguing, but then got a little preachy, and then got a little farfetched, although perhaps the most unsettling thing is how I'm not sure how farfetched it actually was. Not a difficult book to read, but I just couldn't get past its faults to give it a higher rating.

I agree with most of the 2-3 star reviews of this book. It was so slow to get going and then didn't really build to anything worth waiting for. So much of this book was patently implausible bordering on xenophobic in parts and it's greatest crime: just pretty boring.

Honestly, Heather Rose is a brilliant writer. I loved The Museum of Modern Love so much. Bruny is an entirely different novel but it crackles with the same sharp intelligence and brims with empathy. I'm sad it's over, actually.

Yeesh. I saw someone review this as “tomorrow when the war began for grownups” and that’s about right. Except the lazy racism and naff attempts at profundity all smack harder when you’re 31, not 11.

This book was fantastic. I underlined more passages than I ever have (in a novel, no less!) and I laughed aloud a few times. From the setting to the topic to the main character, it checked all my boxes for an intelligent, suspenseful, modern read. In the running for a best book of the year, for sure,

Magnificent. A political thriller, a family drama and a plea to us all to fight to protect the places we love.

3.5 stars. It took me a long time to finally begin reading this book, as I *really* disliked The Museum of Modern Love. However, having spent time on Bruny Island I was intrigued. Fortunately this is completely different to TMML, and I found it an enjoyable read. The build up of suspense throughout the book was good, and only the last few chapters were a bit lacklustre I thought
