I would definitely read another Baker play. This one just left me needing a bit more than if offered. With that being said these characters felt concise and the right amount of unreliable!

first play! still getting used to the shorter and more matter-of-fact writing but this was wonderful. the growing friendship of three misfits with constant mentioning of bukowski, which makes me happy. dialogue was great, it established dynamics and characters very well. i also thought the musical aspect was interesting. i wish this was a longer book because i’d read it. regardless, very very good.

Minor key. Second act a little too quick moving compared to well established first one.

feels like the start of what annie baker really solidified in THE FLICK but even so i love this small story—it just meanders along and for a while i wasn't sure how taken in i was by it but the whole "ladder" thing and the turn that follows absolutely nailed me in the gut. just incredibly emotional stuff. again, would kill to see this staged.
**REREAD 10/5/22 -- still absolutely kills me. it's like poetry and i love the simplicity of how the relationships between these people are conveyed, the way you learn about little pieces of them very slowly. gonna direct a scene from this tomorrow for my directing class so read as a lil refresher on the themes/characters/context
