Received a free copy of this in a draw on Goodreads although it then sat on my to-read shelf for a couple of years. I wish I'd read it earlier! They obviously chose well written and interesting letters to publish as it's an anthology of their favourite columns from the New Internationalist, rather than a complete encyclopedia, so the quality of the work was high and it was fascinating material, describing life in 12 very different societies in the developing world. On a personal level, I'm heavily engaged in microlending so it was really interesting being able to relate these stories to those of the borrowers I've engaged with - I've lent to 9 of the 12 countries here. I found it an enjoyable and educational read, and would like to read more by several of the letter writers.
