I feel like I've finally found a good, educational book about the Civil Rights movement that is easy to read out loud and isn't too detailed for younger kids. The text rhymes, which makes it easy to read, and the illustrations are gorgeous. The only change I might make in the future would be to preface it with a quick mention to the kids that it's about the difference between then and now -- it starts out talking about seperate drinking fountains, etc., and although I'm fairly certain my kindergarteners have heard something about all this, I would want to emphasize the historical context a little. But overall, this went over SO much better than Angela Johnson's Sweet Smell of Roses, which I read a couple weeks ago, and which bored the heck out of my audience.

This book explains life before, during and after the civil rights movement. It has beautiful pictures using collage and paintings. The book is written in a rhyming pattern.
