Maybe I'm being hard on this book because it's regarded as a classic. Although the book deals with weighty themes like life purpose and childhood innocence, it avoids delving into either topic substantially, much in the same way Holden refuses to do almost anything at all. He is one of the most frustrating protagonists I can recall; while I, and I'm sure many others, are sympathetic to his feelings and circumstances, his glass-half-empty view and his refusal to initiate change are exceedingly frustrating as a reader. On top of all of this, the writing lacks the nuanced detail needed to transport you into Holden's world, and the style is so conversational it feels like a caricaturized dialect of "moody teen." I did like various moments throughout the book, but those moments didn't add up to a meaningful or fulfilling reading experience.

This is seriously one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. My inner monologue matches Holden’s, verbatim. I starting crying when I finished this book in part because of how much I related to it. Highly recommend
