Raw, Funny, and Enjoyable

I really loved reading through George M. Johnson’s various memoir vignettes. It was refreshing to read a queer memoir geared toward adolescents. While geared toward adolescents, it’s very much a book any adult should read. Johnson covers topics of love, loss, queer identity, black identity, and growing up in beautifully written essays that will have you laughing, gasping, and crying.

This discussed a lot of difficult topics in depth but honestly I really agree with what he wrote in the beginning - these experiences happened to him as a child and young adult and students (who he wrote this for) should be able to see their experiences represented and so others are able to see what some of their peers might be going through. I didn't love that each chapter ended with a summary of what the author wanted you to learn and I think allowing the reader to take what they need from it might've been better.
