Richard Davenport, Viscount Ashwood, has a hard time reading those around him and social situations that do not follow strict rules and guidelines. He strives to always do his duty and adhere to society's rules. As a result of acting on facts and rules over emotions, people assume that Richard is cold and unfeeling, including Evelyn.

Evelyn has been studying under her father in order to become a doctor, her life's passion being to heal and help others. But as a woman she is consequently met with resistance or brushed aside. She consistently has to prove herself to those around her. Therefore when Richard calls her father, instead of her, to his sister's aid she feels over-looked and that she must prove her abilities once more.

Richard truly doesn't realize that he could have offended or hurt her with this choice. By his view of things: her father is a doctor, his sister needs a doctor. Therefore his sister should be attended to by her father. And as the story progresses they both must work to see things from the other's point of view.

I quite enjoyed this one. I work as a teaching assistant in a classroom for students with autism spectrum disorder and I love that this book showed that not everyone thinks and processes in the same way. That if your just open your mind to the possibility that not everyone interprets things the same way, like Evelyn did, it enables you to understand others better. I was very happy to see this portrayed in a book.

This book also had a mystery in it, my favorite! Sure, I was able to work out who our villian was, but it was still fun to read. Plus it ends on a pretty intense cliffhanger that leads us right into the next book. This has been on of my favorites from this series thus far.

Many thanks to Bree Wolf who shared an electronic copy of this book with me in exchange for an honest review, all opinions above are my own.

A woman with the desire to heal. A lord with a shameful secret. And a contract that binds them together.

Wishing to follow in her father's footsteps, EVELYN PROCTEN has always tended to those in need. Despite social convention, the only future Evelyn can see for herself is that of a doctor…until she is called to Farnworth Manor to tend to the young viscount's sister, who finds herself unmarried and with child.

Unfortunately, her stay at Farnworth Manor once again throws Evelyn into the path of Lord Ashwood, a man she has loved from a distance for many years. A man who has never looked at her twice. A man who disapproves of her professional ambition.

As far as society is concerned, RICHARD DAVENPORT, VISCOUNT ASHWOOD, is a cold-hearted and uncaring man. Although he does not overly care for society's opinion of him, he cannot deny that there is truth in their assessment. Nevertheless, Richard knows his duty and would never act against propriety.

However, the whispers retreat into the background when his unmarried sister reveals to him that she is with child. Determined to maintain her secret, Richard keeps her locked away at Farnworth Manor. Still, in order to ensure his sister's well-being, he is forced to call upon the one woman who has always been able to melt the ice from his heart.

Will he be able to resist her? Or will he succumb to her tender heart and share with her the one secret that has always determined his life?

"To say I loved Oppressed & Empowered is an understatement. It had all the right facets of a perfect historical romance – angst, mystery, danger, awakening love and happiness found. I was just sad to see it come to an end."- Rural Reader, Amazon Review

"This book is based on a brilliant idea that forces one (very gently) to look at things through someone else's eyes, to feel what they feel emotionally and to understand, in a small way, what it is like to have Asperber's Syndrome and what it is like to live with someone with this syndrome. I truly loved everything about this story. "- Zena, Amazon Review

Bree does a stellar job again. I read it in one day, thank you for your wonderful way with words."- FELICITY, Amazon Review

I really enjoyed the beginning and thought the book was going to go a delightful direction. But about half way through (once I was past the point of no return) it started losing me and the rest felt super forced. Bust for me.

Maybe 2.5 stars. I'm always quite interested to read books with neuro-atypical main characters. I wish the foreword hadn't told me: "I've written a book about an autistic main character." I wanted to discover that as I read, to wrestle with seeing the world from the POV of the two main characters. It felt a bit like the autistic parts of the hero's character were assembled from a book describing the autistic experience, rather than from the author's experience with autism.
I catalogued other plot holes where I thought, "Wait--what?" Her father wanted her to marry the hero, but when the hero's father died...suddenly her father imports a different, less cool candidate? Why?? I felt like other things in the world-building and characterisation were told to me rather than shown, and I never ended up caring that much for the characters.
The book was fine. Shan't search out more.

I decided to read this book because I thought it was a Christmas reading. I guess I thought that because of the cover. Doesn't it give you a Christmas feeling? Well, truth is it has some Christmas vibes but I wouldn't call it a Christmas book. Still, a lovely reading for this season.
You get to connect with the characters and their love story. I especially loved that Evelyn was a doctor and how the author writes all the struggles she has to face because she's a woman doctor. Also, I loved Richard and his struggles with socializing and communication. It made him look so cute.
This is the first Bree Wolf's book I read, and I loved it! Definitely will read again another of her novels.

Mhm...

So far, so good, I guess.

Just wish the MCs wouldn't keep acting all judgmental and stuff...
Specific arguments occur again and again, which is pretty tiring...

Other than that, I like the various plots that are intertwined. The hero's sister's predicament, the heroine's desire to be a real doctor, the MCs' romantic feelings for each other, the relationship between the MCs' parents and their plans for their Kids, and of course our cold hero who isn't really cold but simply trying to do what's best for his sister...

Plus, I very much appreciate the way the MCs' relationship developped. Communication is immensely important in a relationship and those two live and embrace that. I love that they are honest with each other and that they talk about their feelings, their weaknesses etc. Pretty cool to see that as a lot of novels are based on miscommunication between MCs. Not the case here after some initial incorrect assessments.

All in all, lovely read. Not sure if I would pick it up again, though.

Cute book

This was a very cute story and easy to read. The chapters are short and it's fast paced. I enjoyed the relationship between Richard and Evelyn although I do was expecting a little more from her.

I would like to thank the author for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Evelyn is the doctors daughter who only wants to follow in her father's footsteps.
Richard doesn't quite understand the world around him, he struggles to read others emotions. Their father's made an agreement that they would marry.
I love the slow burn romance and that the MC has high functioning autism.
