Switching to a non-human character (sort of) made the world of Borne a lot easier to slip into the flow of. I'm still not sure why, maybe it seemed less ridiculous for all the nonsense to be happening to a nonsense creature. Probably my favorite VanderMeer protagonist I've read.

This story was heartbreaking and thought-provoking. It challenged me to think about animals in a different way. The story might stand on its own okay, but it's meant as a companion novella to Borne. I would read Borne before this.

Absolutely beautiful. I adore the Strange Bird. A gorgeous tragic creature. Weeping towards the end.

Just as strange, eerie, and haunting as you expect Jeff VanderMeer's work to be. I think I would have benefited from reading Borne first, but this was a solid peek into that world. I never finish one of VanderMeer's books without feeling the atrocities that we humans inflict on the natural world in a deep and acute way. This one was no different.
