Entertaining, fast action story. Intriguing and likable protagonist. Some frustrating plot set-ups, but overall I liked this book.

I will start by exposing my biases: I LOVE thrillers. Like no one could love thrillers more than me. And this is one of the best in class. You can tell that the author did his homework in ensuring that the thriller portions are plausible (minus the part where our hero doesn't die of internal injuries, naturally).

I found this book in a Little Free Library in Durham, NC, and am so truly very glad that I did. I am leaving it at another Little Free Library for someone else to enjoy. I will put further books by this author on my reading wishlist.

As for the mystery that underlay the thriller -- it kept me guessing until the very end.

If you are a thriller fan, pick up this book. It is a winner.

The first chapter has lots of drama and suspense and sets the tone for the rest of the book. It starts out with Lauren and her husband Roger Heller going out to dinner. As they are walking out of the restaurant, Roger forgets his wallet. He turns to head back into the restaurant, when he hears Lauren call his name. The last thing Lauren remembers before she awakens in a hospital bed is Roger saying “Why her”? Now Roger has disappeared.

Lauren calls Nick, Roger’s estranged brother to help her locate her husband. What Nick discovers about Roger blows him away and has him racing all over the place on a wild goose chase to find his brother and reunite him with his family. The truth about what truly happened to Roger will leave you speechless.

Mr. Finder is back with his latest thriller, Vanished. I first tried Mr. Finder’s work when I read Power Play. After that I knew I had to make sure I read more of his books. Vanished is a one sit read….literally! I sat down and started reading this book and before I knew it the time had flown by and I was done. I can say one good thing about Mr. Finder; I always know what I can expect from him…a good story line, good characters, and a nice recommendation from me. I am anxiously waiting what he will come up with next.

Nick Heller is the main character of this opening novel and the series that follows. Interesting character. I liked the whole cast. They were quirky and individualistic. No real stereotypes. That's always a good aspect of a novel. They mystery was pretty twisty and turny. The ultimate bad guy was less of a surprise. I kind of twigged a little early. Still a great ride, though.

I thought this was a really good book. Enjoyed the characters - just enough 'snark' to break the tension. Twists enough to keep my attention riveted.

Not a masterpiece by any means but exactly what I needed at the moment, so the first five stars of the year goes to Vanished. And it's almost March. It's being a weird year.

With his novel Vanished, Joseph Finder introduces the character of Nick Heller a private spy who served with the U.S. Army Special Forces. In this first instalment Nick is dealing with the disappearance of his older brother Roger who vanishes after his wife is attacked. Nick faces the task of protecting his sister-in-law and nephew while uncovering the circumstances of his brother's disappearance. The more he uncovers the more he realizes that his brother is living a double-life. This fast-paced book leads readers into the grey area where governments and private contractors work in, in other words, the money-making side of war.

Our hero is intelligent, tough, loyal and seems to follow his own code of honour. He can also be funny, charming and a smartass when the situation calls for it. Like any great character there's conflict in his background. His father is in jail for fraud and grand larceny after embezzling millions of dollars and his once close relationship with his brother is now rocky.

Vanished is an enjoyable action-packed read filled with interesting characters. I'm glad I decided to read it before reading the ARC I got of Buried Secrets. the next book by Joseph Heller featuring Nick Heller private-spy extraordinaire.
