Parts of this book were excellent and parts made me consider a DNF. This is a completely godless book and as such the futility of life is glaring and depressing. I did not like the gloominess of the first part of the book. However, that set the stage for the rest of the book. I didn’t actively dislike it though I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I appreciate the author’s reverence for human life and the hope/inspiration he tries to give, though it rings empty to me. I do love the idea that we should and do get to choose what we care about passionately and his thoughts on our society’s privilege leading to our discontent so I wouldn’t discourage a read either. I don’t want to change my thoughts to mirror those in this book but it was an interesting perspective with value, even if I don’t agree with its foundation.

This book is what happens when you combine basic Buddhist philosophy with 21st century edginess.

Some parts are on the nose and inspirational, but you need to get through the sea of parables and cliches to get there.

After the basic groundwork, we get to the nitty gritty when Manson talks about himself and shares his vulnerabilities from the past. It’s not like a singular event can transform a person and we get to see his journey and how the reader can relate.

I had to read this book for a class (which I had to take to get my degree but the class contributed literally nothing), and I hated every page of it.

Manson seems to be trying to justify his poor behavior and negative outlook on life in this book - even going as far as to tell a mourning father (his son died in a horrific vehicular accident) that his response to his son’s death was 100% his choice and he was wrong for being so negatively impacted by the loss of his son.

While life does suck sometimes, it’s definitely not as bad as Manson tries to claim it is, and I really feel bad for how miserably he’s living his life. One’s mindset drives ~90% of how they view their life. To have such a pessimistic view on things really makes my heart heavy.

not for me + problematic

i probably should have stopped listening after this casually transphobic gem:

“[...] the decision to finally dump that deadbeat boyfriend whom you caught wearing your pantyhose a few too many times.”

...but i am the worst combination of stubborn and optimistic.
