I like Rebus as a character, though he's one of those tragic ones. I don't, however, love short stories. But all together, it was a fine collection.

It's been a while since I've read a Rebus novel. I picked this one up not realizing it is short stories, which I'm not a fan of to begin with. That held true for this book. None of them truly captured my attention. The most interesting one was about an old body found in the crevice of a wall. The rest were average and highlighted Rebus' partner's personality more than Rebus'.

One of my retirement dreams is to read them all over again, in correct order, back-to-back!

I can't really get lost in any book right now so I picked these short stories. They were enjoyable and easy to figure out. I might try out book one in the series if I find it in a LFL or at a Bookcrossing meet up.

Edinburgh, rumpled detective with some sad family backstory, earnest young assistant and mysteries solved in a chapter. what's not to like? Throw in the wonderful addition for one story of a surprisingly clever French detective named Cluzeau.

I had never read an Ian Rankin, and the reviewer comments here caution against making this collection of twelve stories about Inspector John Rebus of Edinburgh the first Rankin you read—but I liked all twelve stories. Very human, very honest. “Sunday” explores Rebus’s thoughts at the end of a weekend in which he has had to kill someone (in the line of duty), a first for him. A fellow cop checks on him. At the end: “Rebus knew of a church in Mayfield with an evening service on a Sunday. A church with a restrained congregation and a minister not overly keen on prying into one’s affairs.”

A good set of short stories however I think I prefer Rebus when he is in a longer, more intense plot that builds up over time.
