I think I read this as a child, but I can't really remember. There's a great warmth in this story, but Lindgren also never shies away from sadness and how scary things can feel, especially when you are a child. But her children characters are also very strong and brave and there's a great description of friendship in this story.

The illustrations by Ilon Wikland are in comparison to modern standards quite simple, but lovely. Wikland is the illustrator behind some of the world's most beloved children's stories. Born and raised in Estonia, Wikland moved to Sweden as a refugee in 1944. Working as an artist, Wikland met Astrid Lindgren, best known for her Pippi Longstockings tales, and went on to illustrate over ten of Lindgren's books.
