Goodreads recommend this book to me while I was reading [b:Redwall|7996|Redwall (Redwall, #1)|Brian Jacques|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1327877368s/7996.jpg|486980] last month so I figured I'd pick it up because I'm a sucker for books told through animals perspectives and I had a thing for squirrels when I was like 14. It was a wonderful tale and I may pick up the sequel eventually.

I've been reading this book series over and over again ever since I was a child, and it is my absolutely biggest comfort read.

Everything about it is so, so wholesome and loveable, it is beautifully written and makes me wish I were a little squirrel roaming through the woods. Yes, please.
This gives me peace, and it makes me feel so much love for the little things in life.

This almost makes me want to have kids so that I can pass it in to them.

And seriously, you never get too old to read children's books.

admittedly, I'm biased because this was my favorite series as a kid that I'm now rereading as an adult, but I'm still struck by how well this series handles complicated, heavy, real-world problems in a way that, not only brings light and hope, but communicates effectively with its young target audience. I absolutely grew into a better person because of reading these books.

This was a fun book, although I found it a bit predictable and simple. The good guys are predictably good, and the bad guys are pretty one-sidedly bad. Not much in the way of surprises or character development. But I liked the characters, the story was charming and it had enough body to the story that it felt like a real place. I think it might be on the young side for an audience: probably more in the 6-9 y.o. range rather than 8-12 where my kids are, but I'll read it to them and see what they think.

The first book in another excellent series in the genre “woodland animals with swords,” this book is sure to delight fans of Green Ember and other similar books. Squirrels, moles, otters, and hedgehogs fill the island of Mistmantle and root out an evil that threatens their peace. It is completely clean, though not free from evil, as no book with a good vs. evil plot can be.

CC: culling of weak animals, murder, not quite demon possession but a lurking darkness, poison, drunkenness used as a tool for keeping the king inept, violence

Decent, but a lot like the Redwall books, and I like Redwall better. This is definitely shorter and less dense, and also maybe a little less scary than most of Redwall, but I'm not sure it's enough of any of those to actually make it more suitable for younger readers, especially with some of the very adult concepts addressed here, like euthanasia for the "unfit". It is a good book; an interesting and somewhat compelling adventure, but I really don't think I'll be reading any more of them.

This is one of my favorite series of all time. The characters are complex and loveable, the setting is absolutely magical, and it doesn't shy away from intense, difficult topics. This particular book is part adventure, part coming of age, and part political intrigue for kids. It deals with infanticide and forced labor, and highlights the best and worst of all the animals on the Isle of Mistmantle. The writing in this series is some of the best I have ever experienced. It's easy, light, detailed, funny, emotive, somber, in all the right places.

i love this tale of intrigue involving the animals of the isle of mismantle. there are squirrels, hedgehogs, moles and otters that make up this community. urchin is the squirrel that falls from the sky and his destiny is tied into that of the island. very interesting and engaging. i loved it! this is the first book in a series of three. i don't typically read series, but i so love these characters, that i'm eager to read books two and three.
