I was certain for the first 1/2-3/4 of this book that it would be a 2 or 3 star read at best. The characters felt boring and predictable, as did the story, and when you [seemingly] get the big twist it’s kind of a let down. But don’t you worry, folks, it ain’t over yet! What a wild turn of events in those final chapters. Of course I still feel like more work could’ve been done in the first half(ish) of the book to make certain things less obvious, but in the end it still got me.

Riley, my guy, let’s talk. Stop making your leading lady sleep with the bad guy. It’s a dead giveaway. As SOON as that went down I knew he was the villain.

This is my third book by Riley Sager and the one that has been recommended to me the most. I know this is many people’s favourite by this author, but while I enjoyed it, I wouldn’t say it was my favourite.
I usually shy away from books with medical content and the last third of the book was so heavy on this topic I felt sick to my stomach. And the FMC was such a limp noodle/damsel in distress—a trope that I found myself constantly being frustrated by. She was so downtrodden that being a final girl never really paid off in the end.
The tension and twists were effective, making it a thriller I didn’t want to put down, so overall I would recommend it if you already are a fan of this genre.

Book club pick. I guessed the villain(s) pretty early on and it was very easy to piece together the connection to
old Mr. Bartholomew
and
Cornelia
. REGARDLESS, it’s very good writing and I didn’t guess the final twist. I was up all night and that’s a mark of a good thriller in my opinion.

For the most part, this book was a 3 stars - nice atmosphere, lots of creepy ideas and potential that couldn't become something better because of the snail pace and how utterly predictable every twist and turn managed to be.

But the last twenty percent of the book changed it up enough to earn a 3.5 - it veered from the most obvious to something a little more on the realistic side, even if the message was sometimes heavy handed.
The book had some genuinely chilling moments, like realising the person you're texting is faking their identity, or realising someone had been inside your apartment while you were sleeping -
it's so violating, the whole thing. The ending was another positive aspect, it felt very cathartic to watch things finally unfold.

Still not the best experience, though. It was very slow, and the main character was so. fucking. dumb. Oh my god. It was infuriating how she would simply forget a lesson she had just!! learned!! Overrall, just above OK, and I'm not sure I'd read another book by Riley Sager.
