I guess I don't like murder mysteries. Nothing is really wrong with this book, I just was not a fan of the genre.

Though it felt like our main character D.D. Warren was taking more of a back seat role here, she was still a big part of this book. The character Flora took the lead more it seemed. They were working together and trying to figure each other out. It was good seeing the progression of the Flora character and what she is trying to do now, though she is not completely healed still, she is stepping in the right direction. Seeing D.D. almost struggle with sticking with protocol and paperwork, what will this mean for the character and the series?

I loved reading this book. The switch between first person and third was a good indicator of who was the focus at any given time. With twists and turns, so many twists and turns, I really loved the journey. Definitely kept my interest. One thing though - I kept forgetting that this was a murder mystery at its core, so my expectations were in some ways not met. For example, Flora Dane didn't change as much as I would have liked. All of her character development was off-camera. That's fine for a detective series, as I would expect her to only change slowly over the arc of the series (and catch more bad guys along the way). I also was disappointed with who the bad guy ended up as, but that can't be helped. The story was still good and emotionally gripping -- be prepared!

I am giving this installation of the D.D. Warren series four stars because I felt the plot was a little outlandish. However, it was a very enjoyable read, making me sad towards the end.

I know I’m an animal starting this series right in the middle! A friend recommended this author and this series and loaned me her copy. It was easier than I expected to jump into the middle of the series, and I’m glad I did. This book brings me back to when all I read were mystery, thrillers.
This story was moving and it had me tearing up at the end. The case is about a family of 3 kids, who were in foster care for only one year, and their journey back to becoming a family. We get to explore all this after all but one of them is murdered. It was tragic and heartbreaking. I did like how the detective worked through the crime, and I’m going to continue the series.

I read this entire book and it was nonsensical AF but what really sent me flying into outer space was Gardner repeatedly writing a grown ass middle aged man "had sex" with a 13-year-old girl. You can't "have sex" with an underage teen when you are a grown man. You are r@ping her. And you cannot seduce a 13-year-old, or vice versa. You're grooming her. Period. So because of this, I'm not going to give my full final review as usual. I like Gardner but this was NOT it.

My Rating System: 1⭐️ ticked no boxes COMPLETE FAIL!!!
Detective D.D. Warren is back and so is Flora Danes - in a fight against the clock to find a killer that is intent on wiping out an entire family. So far four of the five have been cruelly gunned down in their home and the remaining family member a 16 year old girl is missing, is she a suspect, is there something else going on here?
Flora is back as vigilante avenger - is she going to assist the police or get in D.D.’s way…
OK - this did not go how I was hoping or expecting… I was pumped for this one I wanted to read more about Flora and I was hoping D.D. Would get her attitude in check and things would get real…
It has also taken me 10 days to do my review because I was flipping between 2 and 1 star but after some serious discussion with my good friend GirlWithThePinkSkiMask who also read this I was able to gather my thoughts… Thank you Pink
