It was okay, sort of figured out the plot in the middle of the book so it wasn’t as exciting anymore but still finished. Someone who loves dogs may give this a 3.5

I was surprised by how much I liked this book! I did not suspect what really happened until the right end. I had a lot of fun listening to the audiobook. I thought it was quite cleverly written, but the only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I felt the main character did not change that much along the story and I wished more from that perspective as she didn't feel that real to me.

I am so sick and tired of the female protagonists who are unrealistic. In real life, the highly-intelligent, beautiful, but "damaged" Morgan Prager would have had a group of friends, who would have set her straight about her new secretive boyfriend. Why do all of these women never have friends around to hash stuff out? I just don't buy it. I give the book 3 stars rather than 2 because I didn't know right away where the story was leading, but figured it out about 1/3 of the way through. I liked the premise of the dogs being central to the story, but the overly formal dialogue and unbelievability of the main characters just made me frustrated.

This book really wasn't what I was expecting. It was hard for me to like the main character. It wasn't that she was out and out horrible, it's just that she wasn't relatable and was off-putting at times. Some of her actions/reactions were bizarre and it was hard for me to side with her. For instance, when she found her fiance dead, she locked herself in the bathroom and called the cops. But when they came to her door, they broke it down, and shot one of her dogs, while she remained in the bathroom. I understand she was in shock but if you have someone you love dearly, you don't put them in a situation to be killed. Then, when she enlisted the help of a lawyer to get her dogs back, she only advocated to get one back, which I thought was still more bizarre.

Another thing I really didn't like about the book was that the main character was raped. If I had known that beforehand, I wouldn't have attempted this read. It's too hard for me to read about that subject matter. The rape segue seemed randomly thrown in and purposeless, at least at the time. One of the things that kept this book from being better was the lack of continuity. It seemed like a stilted read.

Psychological suspense, heavily featuring dog rescue organizations. Kept me reading!
