I had a lot of grievances last issue.
But part of me didn't want to give up on Hawkeye.

This was a pretty good issue and I think it's setting up an interesting arc. So... I guess... I'll give it another shot.

Okay, #4 is where this series starts to lose me. Not enough to drop down to 2 stars - this is still a basically likeable read - but there are elements in it I don't much care for. For one, the antagonist goes from genuinely creepy to honestly kind of stupid. I pretty much lost all interest in him before his sticky end arrived, and the way Kate reduced him in size was just a little bit twee. Secondly, before said sticky end, there was a part where that antagonist, during a police interview, said something to Kate that clearly played into her back story (of which, again, I know nothing).

Part of what stops me from getting into a lot of superhero comics is I always feel there's this giant wedge of back story I'm somehow expected to assimilate. That puts me off a bit, and I was honestly happy going along here, knowing nothing else about Kate Bishop but clearly such is not going to continue. I can't blame Thompson for that - she's obviously working in a wider universe - so the mild disappointment is mine to manage, but still. And to top it all off, that back story would involve Daddy issues, which is possibly the most common and least interesting back story trope ever devised. Honestly, there should be a moratorium.

Nice ending to the arc that also sets up a much bigger and possibly even more exciting story.

The Best Of: Hawkeye #4

1. How Kate Bishop does not give a crap when faced with a burly villain threatening her even as she is tied down to a chair. Some of the highlights? "You should check to see if anyone else is using that, because let me tell you, me and another guy are both called Hawkeye, and it's a real pain." Or her proud response to being irritating. "You have got to be the most irritating person I've ever met." "Yeah, I get that a lot." That little smirk! Beautiful.

2. The fact that Kate Bishop has weaponized the bobby pin. A "bomby pin" arrow? Brillant, inspired, and easily on hand at any time if you're a girl.

3. Ramona bringing Mikka back to her right mind with love! And kissing! Kate's reaction to that is also priceless.

4. Kate acknowledging she has crappy taste in men. "Oh, you've got to be kidding me. It's frat-cute Greg. I continue to have the literal worst taste in men."

5. Kate Bishop's sass levels are prime here, and it's beautiful. "That's right, follow little Kate, you third-rate Hulk. Follow Kate away from your little "people batteries"."

6. Kate using the freaking Sound of Music to deflate all the hate-energy out of Greg so she can stop him. Finally, that movie is useful to someone.

7. Kate's friends all waiting for her in her apartment and then Kate realizing she has people anchoring her to L.A. now and not expecting that.

8. Any interaction that Kate has with Detective Rivera. All of them are comedic gold, and Detective Rivera just looks so done with the world. "Get a license, Bishop. Make it a priority." "Sure, do you have 200 bucks I can borrow?" "Kill me now."

9. Kate trying to figure out what this has to do with her dad and realizing the value of connections. "Anchor points. You can't escape them... And maybe you shouldn't."

10. Jessica Jones has come to help our budding PI. She can be her PI mentor. Can't wait for the next issue!
