"All these folks I've never met became gods over my life. Now I gotta take the power back."
On the Come Up is Angie Thomas' second book, and I loved it! This book is different from The Hate U Give, but it has the same setting, and the main character is a black teen girl in both books. On the Come Up still deals with serious issues like The Hate U Give, but this one has a lighter tone. Angie Thomas is so talented, and I love the differences and similarities in both books.
I really enjoyed being in Bri's head for a bit. She's such a fun and intriguing character, and I am so on board if Angie decides to write more about her later. I think she's an admirable character, and I loved seeing her sort out everything that was going on. She cares about her family, friends, and community so deeply.
I highly recommend picking up both of Angie Thomas' books, and I can't wait to see what she does next!

I liked this book a lot. Buuuut, there were times when I wanted to go into this bool to slap some sense into Bri. I mean don't get me wrong I love her, but she was like suuuuuch a typical teenager. When EVERYONE told her no, she did yes. Like come on. Anyway, I liked the other characters especially Bri's family, and I really liked her lyrics. I was even trying to rap them, didn't work out great. Definitely won't be a rappper. But Bri will for sure. And I loved what she said "can't say brilliant without first saying bri" bc yah she's made mistakes and will probably keep making them, but she is BRIlliant

There’s a lot to love about Bri and her story. Angie Thomas is a master at writing relationships, and all of her characters are full of heart. There’s so much going on in the book, though: it probably would have been 5 stars for me with some paring down. And there were a few conversations that weren’t entirely authentic— that had a *this is an important point* tinge of didacticism. But these are minor quibbles in an overall compelling story about one teen who learns the power of her voice.

Angie! Thomas! Please! Offer! Me! Some! Spare! Talent!
This book...oh my god, it was so gOOD. Thomas's writing style is fantastic. The characters are great and impeccably developed. The way that the emotional scenes hit...OW. Just. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
