"Ambition and gallantry were the soul of the Court, and employed both sexes equally."

"Truth and appearances seldom go together."

The French Court with all its secrecy, affairs, deception, ambition and intrigue, but Madame de Cleves wants no part of it. A woman with a conscience does not belong.
Unfortunately not terribly interesting and much too drawn out.

This was a rollercoaster and I had so much fun reading it. We follow Mme de Cleves who has just gotten married to a man who absolutely loves her but she doesn't love him back or at least the way he wants to be loved. And oh boy, does he let us know that she doesn't reciprocate his love.

She confessed to her husband that she is in love with another man. Her husband becomes obsessed with finding out who the main is. The poor guy died of jealously and heartbreak when he found out.

While she was confessing to her husband, another man who was in love with her overheard their conversation. He happens to be the most handsome man in the French court. And yes, she is in love with him (how cliché)

Considering the fact that his man (Duc de Nemours) has been in love so many times in this 180 page book, I don't trust his love and neither did Mme de Cleves. So even when her husband died, she never got with him. She went into isolation, time and absence tamed Nemours love for her.

I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. It is a tale against romantic love (or at least the perils of romantic love) and a testament of relentless dedication to duty and regret. I'd call it the Romeo and Juliet for mature logical aromatic readers.

'The Princess of Cleves' by Madame de La Fayette with script and art by Catel and Claire Bouilhac is a graphic novel adaptation of a classic 17th century French novel.

Mademoiselle de Chartres and her interactions with the French royal court are what comprise this story. When an arranged marriage makes her the Princess of Cleves, it would seem her life is set. Then she meets the handsome Duke de Nemours and the rest of the story is about the Duke pursuing and the Princess denying. For fun, there is an imaginary interview with the original author as a fun extra.

I'm not familiar with the original novel, but this has the feel of classic literature. The art is quite nice, but the story takes place over a period of time and the characters feel a bit static for the length of time. There are also some fairly long stretches of exposition that slow the narrative flow down.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Europe Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
