I have been eyeballing this book for awhile as I saw it popping up all over my recommendations.  I finally was intrigued enough to fall back down into the werewolf alpha rabbit hole. It’s very easy for me to get sucked into the werewolf genre and I have to force myself to take a break and move on to a new genre.  However, this story just sucked me back in and I think this binge is going to be a long one!

What’s not to love about this plot line? A bullied second son, deemed nerdy and insignificant to his pack. Suddenly thrust into a position of power and the great responsibility that comes with it (Yes, I channeled my inner Spider Man spirit for that, thank you Uncle Ben!).  Nolen, said second son, is sent away to train while learning how to fulfill his new role.   He is determined to gain the respect of his pack and be the protector and provider he knows he can be.  His journey along the way brings new people into his life and a new perspective.  Of course, old enemies arise and Nolen is forced to put his words into actions.  It’s a great journey to follow. I won’t spoil it all but I will tell you, read it now! You won’t regret it!

Nolen is a young man of fifteen, he lives with his family and the rest of his pack, the Rhyolite pack and he is the second son of the Alpha and Luna, he is more than happy to be second in command under his big brother and the rest of the pack is happy with that too, until one day when his brother is killed by a neighbouring pack and Nolen has to step into his bog brothers place as the next Alpha.

Nolen is not happy about this as he does not have the best history with his pack , however, he is sent too another neighbouring pack for training, Nolen is nervous at first, but when he starts to get to know the other pack members, he comes into his own and makes friends. When he finishes his training and returns  home for his eighteenth birthday, they are also celebrating his first shift and the finding of his mate, so when he finds her, he is gutted that he can’t tell her because of pack law, but he keeps as close an eye on her as he can.

Fast forward three peaceful and happy years as Alpha of his pack and Nolen is doing really well, however, another pack threatens that peace and in order for him to stop any bloodshed, he challenges that pack’s Alpha and loses. As he struggles to regain his health, Nolen has to find a way to become stronger and take back his pack, but will he be able to gather the strength and support of those he needs to do this and claim his Luna in the process? This is a fantasy romance with aspects of a coming of age tale mixed in where peace and war teeter on a hairs breadth line and love, strength and support are all that hold the balance between the two in this story which will draw you in slowly at first, but then lead you on a wild tale throughout.

Nolen is the second son of the Alpha of their pack, making him mostly unseen. Compared to his perfect brother Archer, Nolen was scrawny and weak. He never had to worry about it though as Archer was the heir to the pack. That is until one day Archer is killed, thrusting Nolen into the spot of heir at the young age of 13.

Nolen was completely unprepared for what was expected of him. Fortunately, there is another heir from a different pack, named Sawyer, undergoing Alpha training to take over his own pack. Nolen’s father decided it was in his best interest to train with Sawyer and his pack until his 18th birthday when Nolen’s wolf is due to show himself.

While Nolen was training with the pack, he met Sawyer's sister Amora and there is an instant connection between them. She was only 10 years old so he chalked it up to a protective feeling of this little girl.

As time goes on, Nolen gets bigger and stronger and feelings for Amora are even more confusing. There is a lot of will they\won't they tension once they hit their teen years.

This was a very well written coming of age paranormal book. Nolen has no self esteem even after he gets bigger and more handsome. He has it in his head that he will never be as good as his brother and that no one will accept him as their Alpha. I like how the author delved into those feelings, often making Nolen be more relatable to the reader. Scrawny, timid boy turns into a strong, handsome and more confident man.

The only thing I did not like was the age of Amora when feelings were starting to develop. She was too young in my eyes. I know there isn’t much of an age difference between the two but where the age difference is makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. Having an 11 year old child myself, I didn’t want to think of a girl that age in a love story. But hey, that is just me in denial that my son is growing up.

Wow! What can I say about this totally captivating and entertaining book. Nolen is a wonderful character and right from the very start I was 100% on his side and wanted him to thrive and succeed. He was the second son, bullied by his pack and definitely not seen as a leader in any way. That all changes and he must become the Alpha and lead his pack into the future. He receives very important training from another pack, where he also makes very valuable bonds. Amora the younger sister to his best friend Sawyer becomes extremely important to his and his packs future. All the characters are wonderfully written and the storyline so creative that once you start reading you won't be able to put it down.

The Second Alpha Heir by C.L. Ledford

This is the first book I've read by the author. The Second Alpha Heir is an amazing read. It will have you crying at the end. Have tissues ready because you will need them.

Nolen is the second born son of the Alpha of his pack. He's not tall and strong like his brother is and he sure isn't as popular. When his brother dies he is the one who is next in line for the Alpha. He does meet his mate, but can't tell her as she isn't of age. The quote I chose for Nolen is: “You are one amazing person. I could never forget coming to your pack; my life changed so much when I lived there.”

Amora is the daughter of another Alpha and she's part of the pack that trains Nolen. She has a crush on him and is hurt to know that when he becomes of age he'll find his mate. When she learns that he's met his mate she is shocked. The quote I chose for Amora is: “Let’s head down then. The pack is waiting for us.”

Highly recommended for Werewolf Paranormal lovers.

OMG!  This book had me in my feelings more than I expected.  The story was original with aspects of true blue werewolf culture.  I loved the characters.  I was drawn towards Nolen, not only because of his heart, but for the ideals he expressed when not feeling like he is good enough.  Anyone that has ever felt that way can relate to Nolen.  The love and respect Nolen feels for Amora is spectacular.  There are so many good things about the way he loves her.  I didn’t want this book to end.  I wanted it to be left open for a series.  My heart was shredded at the end.

If you are a fan of werewolf romance, this one is for you!!

The Second Alpha Heir: C.L. Ledford

In The Second Alpha Heir, tragedy strikes the Rhyolite Werewolf Pack, forcing second born Nolan to step up as Alpha of the pack. Nolan finds his true self, which turns out to be entirely opposite of what he was made to believe by other pack members. From making friends, to finding love, to loss, Nolan takes the reader through his life, from being the underdog to the Alpha.

The characters and feelings of The Second Alpha Heir are highly relatable. The main characters go through the confusion of finding who they truly are, finding love, losing love, and happiness. The reader can feel along with the characters. I laughed, cried, and worried along with them. I was a little skeptical at first, but The Second Alpha Heir by far exceeded my expectations. There was not a single moment I did not like.

For fantasy and werewolf lovers, The Second Alpha Heir hits all the spots. The book is full of twists and turns and is highly relatable.

Nolen never planned to be Alpha, he was the brother to the future Alpha and was always in his shadow. Nolen knew he was loved by his parents but he was scrawny, bullied, and never a candidate until the day he was. Now he is the heir of the Ryholite Pack and has to be trained at a fast speed. He will do his duty with honor but the pack who always looked down on him, will they be able to accept him?

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the fact that the author took time to give us an insight into training to be Alpha. There is so much more to this story that happens and I really was pulled in reading about Nolen and how he comes to terms with his future. Would definitely read more by this author.
