This poetry collection was lovely. It is nice and short, right around 60 pages. It’s split into two sections, each with a distinct voice. The first half seems to be a bit dark, colored with grief and regret. The second section seems to be more centered on restlessness, but also the persistence to keep on living through that restlessness and/or displacement.
Some of my favorite poems were “Confession”, “St. Augustine in Ariel’s Island”, “Street’s End”, and “Looking for Migrants (also for my father)”. I loved the bird themes particularly (this came through really strongly in “Looking for Migrants (also for my father) and “In the Dark Times”), as well as the ocean and ship themes (in “Virgilian Fortunes” and “Soon before All Light is Gone”). This was my first introduction to Andres Rojas, and I would like to read his other book as well.
