This installment of Doctor Strange had some phenomenal moments, but the overall story was a bit of a head-scratcher due to some plot points that make very little sense, at least from my perspective. It was nice to see Doctor Voodoo, Magik, Scarlet Witch and others all in one place, fighting the good fight against, but the overall concept of an ultimate battle pitting magic against science left me a bit cold. (Can't we all just coexist?) Still, it will be interesting to see where the series goes from here.

This was my second read-through of this story arc, and I enjoyed it better the second time. I'm disappointed that Zelma Stanton is such a one-dimensional character, and her rapid involvement and acceptance of all the magic wildness and battles feels fake, but I'm hoping her character gets more attention after the finale of this two-volume arc centering around the Empirikul killing most of the magic in the known universe.

There are some fun easter eggs throughout, and the other magicians' stories were definitely interesting to me.

Kudos to Jason Aaron for making this rather outdated cliche of a character relevant again, and setting him up for a clean slate going forward.

Read as single issues.

Very compelling arc, and once again, unbelievable art.

I liked the first one more, the villain backstory was a bit generic and I don’t really understand how he was defeated, also wish they would’ve explored more the science vs magic aspect of him more, and finally the trade paperback had the last days of magic single until the end instead of the beginning

I am not familiar as some with Doctor Strange, so reading the current volumes have been very interesting. In this line, the magic is dying and Doctor Strange and a bunch of other figures from Marvel (hello, interesting appearance from Doctor Voodoo!) as well as a librarian that just happens to be there needs to fix it. Its very entertaining and you can see the pain from everyone who is trying to save magic. I look forward to seeing what happens in this series.

When we left you last time, your hero (me) was pondering whether the slow burn first volume of this book would be justified by the greatness of the second volume!

Since then you've hopefully made a very thorough and searching inventory of yourself. If you're calling me your "hero" in any sense of the word, you've got some problems.

Also, since then, I've read the second volume. And I have an answer: kinda.

Kinda!

The first volume was slow as shit, and the second volume is fast as fuck. At all the oddest times. The actual fighting that goes on between Dr. Strange and Science Badguy Asshole is very, very brief. The collecting of artifacts and interesting bits that could go along with that are also rushed. But the standing around and talking about how the odds aren't good...that seems to go on and on. Like a Jack Johnson song. The one that goes "On and On." That wasn't a slam on Jack Johnson. I COULD slam Jack Johnson, but I won't. I feel like he lives in Hawaii and is stoned all the time and has probably one of the better lives ever lived. Why attack? If I'm not going to have one of the top 10 best lives ever, someone should, and I don't want to be the guy that shits all over that possibility.

Anyway, the story is decompressed up top, compressed to hell after that.

Oh, and we also get an issue that shows how the Mexican Dr. Strange got involved (pretty much exactly like Dr. Strange did) and a couple of Chinese Dr. Stranges (pretty much exactly like Dr. Strange did), a Dr. Strange from New Orleans (pretty much exactly like Dr. Strange did, but with PYM PARTICLES!), and an eastern European Dr. Strange (pretty much the same, but drunk).

All these other Dr. Stranges have weird, made-up sounding names. Which has to be hard. If you've ever had a friend who tried to change his name in, say, college, nobody lets that shit fly. So if you changed your name in adulthood, and if you cited the reason for the name change as being "because I'm a wizard now," I think you'd run into some resistance, and I'd have to say I side with the resistance on that one.

At the end of the day, a pretty good book, but damn do I feel like the beginning was really slow and the end was quick, that we saw a lot of stuff I didn't care about and then rushed through some things I really wanted to see.

Updated review:
“You want a monster? Come on then, you bastard, I’ll be your monster.”
Damn, I was harsh the first time round?! This is such a good story arc don’t listen to my past self lol. I remember not really gelling with the science part or even some of the other magicians but rereading it now, it comes together so well! It’s also a LOT darker than you expect it to be, but good lord, if we ever got a grungy, desperate, axe and arrow wielding Benedict Cumberbatch version of Strange, with the monster in the cellar to boot, (that morphing scene??!!?
