Once again a good story with interesting characters. Without any spoilers I can say I didn’t quite figure out the end until it happen. I really enjoy kiersten Modglin’s style of story telling. Kicks in right away and all questions answered.

There just wasn't enough to this book to keep me all that interested.

The flashbacks to the wedding were boring and uneventful. Current day was also boring and uneventful. Literally nothing happens in this book. There's a moment there where someone might be following her around, but… that's as far as we get into any kind of suspense. Oh, that and some drama with Colbie's sister that seemed out of place and pointless.

We didn't dive deep enough into the whole mess with Paige, which, in my opinion, should have been where some of those flashbacks came from. I needed more about Phil and his sketchy past. The way that it was, we were given so little information about him that I really didn't care much about his death.

Once the truth was all laid out at the end, it just felt like facts were being presented to me. This is what happened, this is why, and that is that. I had no emotional connection to the characters or to their relationships with one another.

Then we're made to accept the facts and poof, the book is over. No real closure or conclusion. Here's what happened. The end.

I can't recommend this book.

3.25 stars

I waited a while before I wrote this review to let it sit with me and reflect a little because I wasn't sure if I was going to agree with my initial star review of 3.25. Unfortunately, I waited too long and the entire plot was erased from my brain and I had to read the blurb to remind myself. Not normally a good sign.

This is my second Kiersten Modglin book and I didn't even realize it. I had previously read Hemlock (published in 2024) and since this one is a decade older than Hemlock (and the fact I didn't even realize it was the same author) I'm going to chalk it up to the fact that her writing and storytelling has gotten so much better since.

This one was interesting. It was hard for me to get into it in the beginning and keep all the people straight in my head, but once I got that all to click I really enjoyed myself. Then I found sections where I didn't want to even pick the book back up. However, I'm super nosy and always have to know how things end, so I wanted to know just how horrible (or not) her husband was. I mean, I was a little disappointed by the way it ended.

Will this be my last Modglin book? No. Will this be my last one going back this far into her library? Yes.

Definitely not your typical Kiersten Modglin book. I almost DNF several times. There were too many things that didn’t make sense including the reason for the murder and how it happened.  Most of the book wasn’t reasonably believable.

This book has an interesting premise but it gets slow half way through. I think I was expecting more from this author. The twist and the ending had me shaking my head.

This book was nothing special. It was forgettable. More of a romance than a thriller, which turned me from enjoying it. The FMC was relatable, but the story and plot twist wasn’t realistic.

I was able to figure out most of the plot twists. I did get fooled once, which increased my rating from a 2 star to a 3 stars, but it’s honestly generous. I’m beginning to think these books and this author just aren’t my cup of tea.

If you’re a new reader getting their feet wet with thrillers, I’d say her writing and books might be for you.
