The best in the series so far! The action progressed nicely, Fort's character grew well, and the crime was decidedly vicious. Great story with lots of mystery, but the end was spectacular. Granted, I was hoping for a longer fight with a particular villain, but there were a lot of twists and shocking surprises that had to be taken into account. I gotta say that the very end of the book was my favourite part– a sweet and endearing moment between Fort and Suze. Can't wait to keep going with these books!

This is the second in an urban-fantasy/vampire series that began with "Generation V." It seems improbable that anyone would read a vampire book without anticipating horror elements, but, just in case, I offer the content warning that there are, indeed, quite gruesome moments.... This is not the first vampire series that I've tried, but it is the first one that I've enjoyed. Vampires aren't usually my cup of tea, but I find the hero, young Fortitude Scott, very likable. Mild spoilers ahead.
SpoilerFortitude works minimum-wage jobs, and, to his family's disapproval, cares about the fate of mere humans. This time round, the plot involves both elves (cold, callous elves, not sweet ones) and a terrifying skinwalker. Happily, one of my favorite characters from book one, the kitsune Suzume, plays a major part again.

I enjoyed this a notch less than the first book, but still quite enough that I'm glad book three is waiting on my shelves. I particularly appreciate the frequent humor and the hero's self-deprecation. While both book one and book two have largely self-contained plots, Fortitude ends each one in a different position than he began. This gives a nice sense of progression through the series. 3.5 stars out of 5.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

Wow, I really like this series! Yay for a new good series found! Oh no, there is the despair, what if it turns bad? Nooooooo! Happy thoughts, happy thoughts!

Fort is a bit more kick-ass now than in book 1. His brother had been training him. And I liked to see the growing he did. Become more sure of himself, being able to take charge. But he still has a lot of growing to do.

And we found out why he still is human...but I can't say more about that. Back to the story.

A murderer is loose and Fort wants to find that person, thing or whatever. It leads him to something big, so it's good he has his side-kick kitsune with him. And Suze is awesome, so sure of herself, kick-ass and just cool.

I can't say anything about the bad guy..bad guys..bad ones..but cool. I liked it. I really liked. But then I like that..which I can't say.

It was nice to see more of the family dynamics too. I actually like his brother now, and even his insane sister.

So yes of course I recommend it and I need more.

I'm not nearly as immersed into this series because it's book two, and I never read book one. I think the book does well on its own but the author could have back tracked a bit better so I could catch more of what happened in book one. I think the characters are pretty strong even though Fortitude comes off as pretty weak main character. This is also a different look at the whole vampire genre, the author gives it, it's own flair. I like it however, and I hope to read the next in the series. Thanks overall entertainment was three and a half stars.

I've been preoccupied with house stuff this past week so reading took a back seat most days (boo!). Because of that, I couldn't finish up Iron Night for a few days which was no reflection on how much I enjoyed it!

Fortitude Scott has come a long way since we saw him in Generation V, he's halfway through his transition to full fledged vampire and along with that come all the usual skills and perks. He's been in mini vampire boot camp; training with his brother Chivalry, learning self defense, bulking up and being tutored in how to protect his mother's territory. These developments really show us a different Fort this time around: more confident, definitely more self assured and less uncertain about his place in his family.

Suzume, his friend (but wants to be more, what? she SO does) the Kitsune seems to like this a lot and she's dropping hints like anvils all over the place. This normally would frustrate the hell out of me since Fort is no Don Juan with women which means he's pretty clueless and really? after 2 books PLEASE KISS ALREADY!! Thankfully, despite some false starts we finally see an infinitesimal shift in their relationship. None of this diminishes the fact that the mystery was entertaining and taut enough to help me gloss over all that dithering and an uneasy partnership with his sister Prudence cranked the enjoyment way up for me. Yes, Pru is a blood thirsty psychopath but she make no excuses and for that she is a hoot.

This is a different take on the typical UF/vampire tale and as an avid reader of this genre I am very appreciative of that fact. The developments at the end of Iron Night leave us with a million possibilities to explore along with Fortitude and I'm looking forward to seeing where the next book takes him and Suzume.

Just as much fun as the first one. This one has even MORE Suzume-Fort shipping as she tries to set him up with a crunchy-granola New Age shop owner involved in their latest investigation.

Also some putting-characters-through-the-wringer in terms of Fort's Brother's dealing with the death of his wife and the way an particularly evil character ends up using one of Fort's ex girlfriends.....

Still going on to the third one!

The first one was good but this one was even better. The world that's been created in that the vampire physiology, along with many other aspects is really interesting and different. I really like Fort, Suzume and even Fort's family. They are range from creepy to psychopathic. Can't wait for the next one.

Fort (Fortitude) Scott is back. And dealing with another crisis. When his roommate is brutally killed, it's up to our boy Fort to figure out who the culprit is. Cause, of course, it isn't human in mature. Turns out the killer has ties to the elvish community. And he ain't dealing with no Legolas or Arwen. More of the sociopathic Terry Pratchett type.

Backing Fort up is our favorite Kitsune, Suze. Chivalry is in a few times, but with a heavier emphasis on Prudence showing up. Also, some new characters are introduced that tie-in to the storyline.

It took me a bit to get into this one, but once I did... man, was it hard putting it down. The story was interesting and engaging. Not that many twists in this one but still a fun read. Plus, we learn more about what makes Fort (and even Chivalry) different than other vampires. Plus, I got a kick out of Brennan's mention to cultural anthropology. Even though cultural isn't my subfield (it's archaeology and biological) is was still cool to have a nod. Plus, I like alot of the references to "geeky" stuff such as Firefly, Doctor Who, Zelda, etc.

5 star read for me.

Great sequel.

Bare plot: So, did you think that Fort is somewhere else because he saved some lives and gained some vampire perks in previous book..? Well, no. :) He still drives rusty Fiesta, barely managing his rent waitering tables, but at least he has a great roommate.Fort is still not full vampire but transformation started and there are some changes. Of course, he can't deal with this alone so he's hanging a lot of time with Chivalry learning about family business(I approve) and Suze often drops by in her own peculiar way... When he discovers body of his roommate killed in a gruesome way and left in his flat he takes up on himself to learn what happened. With Suze's help he finds out that murder is only part of a much bigger sinister plan and in his fight against supernatural enemy his mother allies him with a person he least wanted to be allied with...

Wow, did my only complaint about first book come back to haunt me...
I loved the action and fast pace in [b:Generation V|15812812|Generation V (American Vampire, #1)|M.L. Brennan|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1357233789s/15812812.jpg|21538163], but I was on a fence with Fort because his ass was kicked one time too many, both in figurative and literal sense.
Well, I finished Iron Night with major crush on Fort and it has nothing to do with the fact that he is now sporting some serious muscle. It's more of a crush in a way that I wish Fort is real and we could hang out and watch Firefly together. This vampire's ultimate sexual fantasy is Tardis tattoo on a girl!

description

I had an urge to high-five my reader every time Fort was being adorkable.
And that's just it- Fort is such a normal guy. In urban fantasy characters are usually special, powerful or magical and Fort just...is. He's not the biggest bad-ass around even among humans and he has so much more to work on. But he knows his boundaries..he doesn't have hero complex or dying wish. Compared to other supernatural characters in series Fort is not so beautiful, deadly and dangerous. He takes help where he can get and he runs for cover when he's overpowered. And that's why is easy for reader to connect with him.
I loved the mystery and action in this book much more than in first installment.I opened a book and didn't stop until I finished.Big plus is that we are introduced to more sups in this world and Brennan really made them interesting. Hell, she made everything interesting- I swear, we are with Fort's roommate for 6pgs tops and I he was such a cool guy I felt sorry he was killed.
As much as I was engaged in mystery, Fort's scenes with his family stood out. Their relationship is so complicated and if I can describe it in one word it would be schadenfreude, because I know they are twisted and killers, but I am enjoying it sooooo much.... :)
If you were merely interested in series with first book- I think this one will definitely hook you.

Great, great sequel. :)

I liked this book as much as the first and the mystery and plot were even better! The growing friendship between Suzume and Fort was great! I was afraid because Suze is a tough character to pull off because she’s so complicated and unpredictable, but she was even more fun in this book!

Chivalry isn’t in the book much, because he’s spending more time with his dying wife, but we got more Prudence instead. She’s a scary character, a true vampire at heart. I enjoyed watching her relationship with Fort. (Is it wrong to like a Sociopath?)

I liked the new characters that were added as well, mostly the potential love interest. She was cute and sweet and perfect for Fort. Even though I liked her I still want Fort and Suzume to get together because I love them both, but oh boy would that be a whirlwind of a romance.

Warning: Violence and gore (mentions torture)

My Rating: 9/10 Stars

My Summary:

Fortitude has a new job and a new roommate, both improvements from last year. Iron Night takes place four months after the end of Generation V and Fort’s been working out with his older brother Chivalry. He’s also gotten to be good friends with the Kitsune Suzume, which comes with its own problems. When someone is murdered and dumped in Fort’s apartment, his family dismisses it as a human matter, but Fort can’t let it go.
