I have to admit most of the stars are for the elephants.

The first 50 percent of this book are incredible, the second half unfortunately not so much. The ending was just a little bit too chaotic for my taste and kind of lost sight of the original purpose of the book in its attempt to be show off.

Quite an adventurous ride to escape a battlefield into India. This book did not shy away from some brutality.

My biggest issue with the book however was quite a few times, the perspective would change without clear intention and even midway through a paragraph. There was a few instances where the perspective was not made clear on who it was until a few paragraphs in, and one point, the near end of the chapter

This book was almost a page-turner for me, until I got about halfway through. It felt like the story suddenly shifted from their journey to India to unnecessary subplots that did not really add much. The characters were mostly undeveloped, as the protagonist was perceived as completely good and the antagonist completely bad, which made it difficult to connect to them and understand them on a deeper level. Overall, I definitely found this to be interesting, and it was very easy to read, but I think more could have been done to better portray the actuality of the events.

A very beautiful and moving tale, but so very wordy to read at bedtimes (my general reading time) and long chapters - except nearer the end - so it took me a long time to get through it.

Elephant Moon was an alright book that could've been so much better.
What I liked about it was the setting, both time and place, as WWII Burma isn't something you hear or read about very often. I was also fascinated by the veracity of the elephants and their handlers helping people escape the war in Burma. The descriptions of the place were really immersive, too. The elephant behaviour bits were very interesting to read as well.
However, the characters were more like caricatures - and not very good ones. The old matron type; the beautiful, goody two-shoes heroine, who never puts a foot wrong; the super evil baddy and so on. All very lazy and black and white, whereas I like a bit of grey, too.
I'm glad I've read it but I don't know that I'll be recommending it.
