reading this book immediately after going through a breakup was probably one of the worst and best decisions of my life. i quite literally hate nothing more than miscommunication and this book really shows the negative impacts of not communicating effectively. i think sally rooney did an incredible job of emphasising the finite nature of life, and the whole narrative made me feel more human than anything has for a while. life is so short and i really needed this reminder that, no matter how heartbreaking and difficult it can be if things don’t work out, love is worth the risk every single time. marianne and connell are so complex and i found myself both enraged and saddened for them constantly. i don’t think there are two characters better suited to each other than they are. this is a really fantastic, complicated, heartwarming, and frankly, depressing book…and loved it.

This is the second time I’ve read this book, first at 17 and now. And boy does it hit different. I understand and see things I couldn’t before and it’s just a good book

“All these years they’ve been like two little plants sharing the same plot of soil, growing around one another, contorting to make room, taking certain unlikely positions. But in the end she has done something for him, she’s made a new life possible, and she can always feel good about that.”
