My greatest hope is that readers believe this book. I've been working in digital media for ten years, and the accuracy and clear-sightedness with which Lockwood manages to portray what it's like to be a content creator, to be Extremely Online, was surreal, particularly in the moments when it felt like the narrator was scratching at the inside of her own skull, trying to figure out whether her thoughts were her own, trying to understand what a legacy means when THIS is what you do for a living. Also spookily accurate was the second half of the book, the effect of tragedy and real, breathing life on your thoughts, your sense of legacy. This was catharsis. I loved it.

From my perspective, this book does a good job of celebrating disability and difference. There is a key character with a serious genetic disorder who is cherished, admired, loved, and encouraged for exactly who she is.

A narrative told in little snippets of text, each a solid gut punch. If the strength of this book is how painfully plausible it is (e.g. a main character being internet famous for tweeting "Can a dog be twins?"), the brief scene where

someone's therapist tries to convince them to hate the police

significantly weakens its point.

The first half of the book had me wondering why I was reading this book instead of just scrolling Instagram. I have been taking a break from social media, so it felt irritating to read. I have been pulling away from how much time in a day I offer to social media. In the end... this book resonated beautifully. I thought I would trade it; when I finished it, I decided I will keep it. It is a perfect portrayal of our lives in social media, and what pulls us back into the real world. My favorite quote from near the beginning of the book, “Your attention is holy, it is your soul spending itself.”
