'Death in Spring' by Merce Rodoreda is a short fabulist novel that details the life of a man in a strange village. The village tacks its dead into trees and sends a man each year to swim through the river that runs underneath the town. This is very much a story about the town told through the eyes of one of its residents.
This is a very strange story and I often felt distanced from it while reading. This may be because it is told in a stream of consciousness way that often feels overwhelming. Despite feeling like there was a lot being said, the plot itself felt sparse and kind of meandering.
I wonder if a lot was lost in translation and that the fabulist elements do much more in the original work. There was some beautiful use of imagery but I felt that the overall arc of the story was a bit confusing.
