the poetry was excellent. i really get why it speaks to so many people. its a great story. it is objectivity amazing.
i did love how the teen boy the protagonist dated was quite respectful and honestly, he was sweet. i knooowwww look at me complimenting heterosexual men who saw that coming lmao. there is a gay side character (no spoiler) and its very sweet and it was handled very well though not a big part of the book.
part of me wants to give it 4 stars bc its like almost a 4 stars. i just dont really like YA anymore (i know i keep reading it lol) and i dont care that much about heterosexuality. and it just doesn't satisfy my hyper-specific tastes in character personalities you know, but it is literally and outstanding work of fiction. i might give it a 4 at some point idk
if elizabeth acevedo ever writes a book with a queer protagonist and writes a queer story i would lose my mind though haha

This is a YA novel in verse about an American teenager struggling to find her true self and then revealing herself to her Dominican-Republican mother and father. The poems are fantastic and so is the audio version. I loved the protagonist and all of the characters around her. Religion, coming-of-age, school, love, parent-teen relationships are all included here. Elizabeth Acevedo has written a fantastic novel and beautiful, insightful, and emotion-filled poetry. I enjoyed this even more than Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give which was also fantastic.

As much as I enjoyed the print version a while back, the audio version is even more powerful and lovely. Elizabeth Acevedo narrates, and breathes such passion into her protagonist Xiomara. Read this. Listen to this.

Sweet story, told entirely through poetry, which was cool. Another one of those books that made me want to write.

The relatability of the Hispanic Catholic trauma has me utterly nauseous. I am an emotional mess right now, absolutely destroyed inside. The power of words, and the strength poetry give you to express the thoughts you keep deep inside is something I am quite familiar with. This book has so much of myself reflected in it.
