Really fun read. I enjoyed the hell out of the characters and story. Will definitely keep reading this series.

Good book. I want to read some more to see if the character gets his legs, because it was a little shallow, but all in all a great first novel. I'll be looking to read the next one soon.

The Drifter is Petrie's debut novel, and a pretty good one. Veteran (Peter Ash) returns home, struggling with some PTSD issues. Discovers one of his fellow vets has committed suicide, and resolves to help his widow and children by fixing their home. That help turns into something much more serious as new plot details emerge.
I enjoyed it enough that I would definitely pick up his next one to read. In some ways, it reminded me a little of Robert B. Parker's writing, especially in the dialogue between Ash and Lewis (an "honorable" and reforming criminal, much like Parker's Hawk) as the book neared it's conclusion. There were some surprises as it wrapped up, one of which took me a little by surprise, and a couple of relatively unfinished issues (e.g., Ash and Josie), but again, nothing that dramatically affected enjoyment of the book.
I don't know that Ash is a character that would/should be brought back in a sequel, but the author certainly left that opening. To me, he seems like a one shot character, one that would be diminished and caricatured a little if he were brought back in a sequel. However, Petrie may have some ideas for doing so that might be OK. I'll wait and see.
