Eh... just ok. I was a little disapointed. This story had potential to be AMAZING and I don't think the author took it there. The charactorization was immature, meaning not fulled developed and the plot left me wanting. I've only read a couple things by Levine, but so far I'm not impressed.

Inspired by ancient civilizations and religions, Levine did a wonderful job of exploring love and spiritualness.

I'm a huge fan of Gail Carson Levine, but this one didn't quite do it for me. Different from any of her other books, it concentrates on a mortal girl accompanying the god of winds to find the omniscient, omnipresent God that her family worships. It felt mostly like a critique on Christianity, specifically based on one story in the old Testament, and ended up painting God as a probably non-existent entity that they worshipped for no reason. The story itself, religious critique aside, was interesting and unique and I don't regret reading it, but it is unlikely I'll pick it up again, unlike her other books, which I have read multiple times.

Maybe it was just because I expected more from [a:Gail Carson Levine|13677|Gail Carson Levine|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1204660487p2/13677.jpg], and/or maybe because I enjoyed her other books, [b:Ella Enchanted|24337|Ella Enchanted|Gail Carson Levine|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1167521378s/24337.jpg|2485462] and [b:The Two Princesses of Bamarre|183656|The Two Princesses of Bamarre|Gail Carson Levine|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1172520009s/183656.jpg|3155307] so well, but I was overwhelmingly underwhelmed by this one. And this isn't just me griping about that ridiculous cover, I felt the story wasn't at all natural, the plot having to be dragged along instead of moving freely by itself.
I don't hate it enough to give it just two stars, because it is a likable enough story in its way, but I begrudgingly give it three (there should really be a half-star option here).
I did like the attempt to shift focus at a different kind of mythology than what is rampant in modern Western lit, but the portrayal of the characters left me more frustrated than satisfied and not even frustrated enough to be curious.

I have a feeling the story was forced out onto the paper instead of being allowed to write itself. It just felt different reading this from her other books. I'll stop now before I go philosophical on this one, but suffice it to say, if you're looking for a light, romantic fantasy story, this is a pretty safe bet. (Still, you might want to check out the two books I mentioned above instead.)

I actually didn't read the whole thing. Maybe if I did I would have liked it but it was so weird to begin with, I couldn't force myself to keep reading. Also the writing was very choppy. It didn't feel like Levine's other books

The book’s premise combined with its author was solely what drew me in, in addition to the mythology appeal.
But Gail Carson Levine didn’t deliver on this one- or maybe she did and it just wasn’t my thing.
First, the love at first sight was so unrealistic and cheesy, I hated it, and normally I enjoy so-called cheesy things. But this was one brand of Kraft Mac’n’Cheese I did not enjoy.
I felt like everything was just thrown together and happened too quickly. The whole human sacrifice thing didn’t set well with me.
If she would have extended the story to maybe 400 pages, just adding extra detail and stuff it would have been pretty nice.
It also reminded me of the one story in the Bible where that mighty judge had to sacrifice his daughter in the end.

A unique fairytale that reads like a myth. The plot is exciting and the love story is beautiful.

Fair warning: the premise is a bit mature and disturbing - as it deals with human sacrifice.
