This is by far the best middle grade I have ever read! Honestly, this is a perfect read for Autistic kids and people. As an Autistic adult with a space special interest, I related to Ebony-Grace in a deeply personal way. All of the references to Sci-Fi and space things filled me with an incredible amount of joy. Watching everyone call Ebony-Grace weird and crazy and tell her to grow up when she's just trying to connect with them through her special interest was heartbreakingly accurate! Ibi Zoboi narrates her own audiobook, which was a delightful experience. Although this is a quick, lighthearted look into Ebony-Grace's imagination, we do get a few real-life discussions. The girls on the block not only make fun of her for her special interest, but also for being a dark-skinned Black girl. Her grandfather is going through something down south, which is a storyline that weaves in and out throughout the background of this story. There are discussions on the racism Black NASA workers constantly dealt with. I don't want to paint this book as a depressing sad read but I think it would be equally misleading not to mention topics that have heavy potential to trigger Black readers. To end this review, I am in love with this book and will be buying a ton of Ibi Zoboi books!!

Me, starts listening to book: "I love this character. Kid Trekkies unite!"
*reads a few reviews* *is sad how many people can't stand Ebony Grace*
Me, halfway through the book: "Where is this going? Is this about learning to be yourself or about learning to live in the real world? I can't even tell which way I'd rather have it go."
Me, two-thirds of the way through the book: "Wow, Ebony Grace is really dense sometimes isn't she. Like, I understand most of why she's having a hard time, but it's starting to make the story feel repetitive."
*finishes book* "Huh. Okay, I think that was pretty good ending. We'll go with I liked it."
Side note about the 'whether Ebony Grace has autism' discussion: At first I also was hoping for a definitive answer to this question, but I've decided it doesn't matter. We meet lots of people in real life who are having different struggles that we (and sometimes they) can't accurately identify, and maybe it's good for us to practice in fiction. Whether or not Ebony Grace has autism, she needs some extra grace and understanding about parts of life that are extra hard for her, and whether or not she has autism, she needs to learn better ways to deal with those hard parts of her life.
