Wow this was a book of ups and Downs. The ending was pretty horrible. It just kind of ended. Not to sure about what I feel yet.

I'm a sucker for Fitzgerald's style of writing, and at first I was intrigued by the characters and the descriptions. 70% of the way through however I realized there was very little character redemption or plot happening. Essentially, this book is about two spoiled, alcoholic narcissists wasting all of their money and then crying about how hard their lives are. Their love story quickly loses color and there is no clever plotline to keep you interested beyond the characters. Plus, some light racism and misogny definitely pops up and ruins even the enjoyable parts of the book. It's not quite boring enough for two stars, but definitely a stretch for three.

These characters are so obnoxious. Extremely fitting title- damned indeed. I usually would hate such a story with annoying characters so I thought that I wouldn't finish this - with Gloria being so vain and insipid and Anthony being just as selfish and green. He complains about his living when he hardly tries to get a job and drinks incessantly. I knew something was up when I started to feel bad for Gloria, even though I hated her in the beginning. In short, this book is an extreme example of how not to be. It was intriguing enough to read through but it left me wanting a different ending whereby they just continue to suffer without any inheritance.

I enjoyed it until the last 50 pages, where it got really dark. I get that was the point, but it was still not my favorit. I guess it simply did not romanticise the tragedy enough for me.

This book was a wild ride. A perfect example of a work where you might think the characters are terrible people but you still want it to work. It is no Gatsby but it is a journey through a loss of innocence and a fairly compelling one at that.
