It has been a while since I have read and Elvis Cole and Joe Pike book. This was a good little escape to LA and private eye land. Elvis is hired to find the adult son of an eccentric woman. She is a bit of a mystery herself. she has a security detail with her at all times. Seems strange to Elvis as she and her husband were college professors. The son is an overweight podcaster that still survives by getting money from mom. Josh is the podcaster and he stumbles into information about a corrupt city councilman that is taking bribes for property improvements. The information came to him from a former porn star/escort that had been hired by the councilman’s assistant. A Chinese developer with shady ties is involved. Lucy and Ben make an appearance from Baton Rogue and Joe Pike utilizes his “contacts” in order to help save Josh’s life and solve the mystery. The story was believable and not over the top.

Classic stuff by Robert Crais. He always delivers fast-paced stories that are exciting, emotional and funny. A significant change in Elvis's life here that I've been waiting for for too long. Him too. Fantastic book as always!

“Chasing the Light” is #19 in Robert Crais’ Elvis Cole series, and it’s amazing how fresh he keeps his characters and plotting. In this latest outing, Elvis and his pal Joe Pike search fo a missing podcaster, whose mother believes he may be held by The Government at Area 51. Elvis is curious why Mom comes with an enormous security detail when she seems just like a regular crackpot.

Area 51 turns out to be a red herring, but all sorts of other strange happenings are right on point. The missing Josh Shue, a 20-something mess who turns out to be a very astute interviewer, has discovered an explosive city coverup. Josh does not seem to understand the danger he’s in and how many different entities want him to shut up. So, Cole & Pike are juggling Josh, his mother’s really wicked security detail, some even more wickedly armed and creepy killer teams, and Josh’s dad, who thinks his son is an idiot just screwing around.

This is an engrossing and satisfying book, and it would be stingy to give it less than five stars based on that alone. Toss in Crais’ ability to quickly establish interesting characters and the occasional nasty shock, and you’ve got a winner! Many thanks to the publisher, and Netgalley for access to this title in exchange for an honest review. It was a pleasure!

Just what we expect from a Crais novel. Elvis is funny, the story is engaging, there are weird and hilarious characters. Enjoyable as ever, just wish there were more of them.
