I appreciate the topic and I love the approach to history in his books but this one fell a little flat. There’s so much going on, and the characters aren’t always distinguished by more than name, that I think if he’d added more, it would have fleshed it out better and made it clearer. That said I did still enjoy the book and seeing the changes in planes in WWI and getting to glimpse the pilots in the first American squadron.

3.5 stars. This one felt more scattered to me and was overall harder to follow. It wasn’t nearly as compelling of a read as Hale’s previous “hazardous tales”.
